Another story that will break your heart.  Reported by the The Guardian (U.K.), January 2, 2012, a 15 year-old, run-away bride was returned by local officials to her husband and in-laws, only to be abused again.  The actions of the local officials reveal more about the Qur’an’s treatment of a wife by her husband, even to the point of encouraging physical abuse. We might explain away the husband’s actions as that of a deranged man, but how do you explain the actions of local officials? When they returned the run-away to her abuser’s family, their understanding of the Qur’anic verse is made evident by their actions: Qur’an 4:34,  “… Righteous wives are devout and guard what God would have them guard in their husbands’ absence. If you fear high-handedness from your wives, remind them [of the teachings of God], then ignore them when you go to bed, then hit them. If they obey you, you have no right to act against them: God is most high and great.”

I guess the run-away wasn’t much on obedience.
