As the world expected, the new constitution in Egypt (non-Islamist) was approved overwhelmingly by Egyptian voters. Election results, including the specifics of the turnout, will not be released until they are deemed official later in the week. However, it appears that the Muslim Brotherhood and Muhammad Morsi are no longer the “voice of democracy” in Egypt. The only hesitation one might have in making that statement, however, is that current leadership (military) has incarcerated all Brotherhood leaders and ruled the Muslim Brotherhood an “illegal” organization. Here is a revealing quote taken from a Reuters report on the election results:
The authorities, who have billed the transition plan as a path to democracy, have also jailed moderate Islamists and secular-minded activists in recent weeks, including prominent figures in the 2011 uprising against President Hosni Mubarak. … The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies criticized Egyptian media for “stoking hatred towards the Brotherhood” and contributing to a climate of intimidation. … The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington warned that international players risked lending legitimacy to a “flawed and undemocratic progress.”
While Western states have criticized the crackdown and called for inclusive politics, they have put little pressure on Cairo. Egypt, which controls the Suez Canal, has been a cornerstone of U.S. policy in the Middle East since the 1970s, when it became the first Arab state to make peace with Israel.
“Democracy” in action? What a joke. Imagine the future of democracy in America (or any democratic nation) if at the next presidential election every one who voiced opposition to the military’s choice for president was put in jail! There wouldn’t be enough room in prison. The military’s efforts seem to be so persistent that, according to the Reuters article, those being incarcerated even included prominent opposition leaders “in the 2011 uprising against President Hosni Mubarak.” If you remember, that was another move towards democracy in Egypt, the so-called “Arab Spring.” It looks like Arab Spring has sprung a giant hole in Egyptian politics and had zero positive results for the people of Egypt. Mubarak was a military leader who ruled Egypt for thirty years. General el-Sisi is the likely next president of Egypt, and he comes from the same cloth as that of Mubarak!

In spite of how far our country has fallen from the Lord when you look at “democracy” around the world, it makes you appreciate the good old United States of America; truly, we are the land of the free and the home of the brave!
